Doctors do not go on strike, and it has nothing to do with love for patients. Only unionized people go on strike, and most physicians do not belong to a union. They are either in private practice with privileges to practice in certain hospitals or they work in the hospital as an employee or contractor. In any case, medical staff is controlled by a different type of management system than the one that governs everyone else who works in a hospital. They are independent practitioners working under their own professional licenses and although they follow a general code of ethics and certain protocols established by the Chief Medical Officer, they aren't directly supervised by anyone. If they don't give safe, timely, and appropriate orders to the nursing staff for care of a patient and something bad happens to the patient, they can be sued for malpractice and can lose their license. Once they assume care of a patient they become responsible for that patient's care and must follow through with care of that patient unless:
1. The patient recovers and is formally discharged
2. They hand off care of the patient to another medical profesional,
3. The patient discharges himself/herself against medical advice, or
4. The patient dies, through no fault of the care team, while receiving care.
If a physician is contracted to work in an Emergency Room and refuses to take the cases that are brought in (even the seemingly non-emergency ones), that physician can be sued for negligence. No health care professional who is directly responsible for patients can go on strike. Although unionized nurses sometimes go on strike, they cannot do this without first giving the hospitals enough notice to find replacement workers. If they walk off the job after accepting responsibility for a patient it is considered 'patient abandonment' and any nurse who does this is likely to lose his/her license. Why don't doctors go on strike for non-emergency cases?
Ummmm well I want to be a doctor when I grow up and I can say that I would never go on strike because it is my responsibility to take care of people in need. And, that would be a part of my oath. I think a responsible doctor would care for their patients. You never know if a ';none-emergency case'; could become one. You don't take that chance. And, plus you are not only a doctor to make money. It is more then that. Of course, money is important too but there are other ways of showing how you feel about something without putting peoples lives in danger and without not caring for people in need. Why don't doctors go on strike for non-emergency cases?
Why would they ? They took an oath to treat patients. But they can turn over a case to someone else. At least that's what they should do.
For the patient, anything that concerns their body and mind is an emergency...
Because thats against the law.
